Walk down the river Avon at low tide

Avon Estuary wet walk

Walk, wade and splash your way down the river Avon in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Leaving Aveton Gifford at low tide, you’ll follow your guide down the meandering river Avon to Bigbury Bay. On the way, you’ll stop to admire the fields of wild samphire, swim in natural pools, walk across sandy islands and explore the many salt-marshes, creeks and inlets on this beautiful river. We also guarantee you’ll get wet and covered in sand!

Wet walking is one of the best ways to appreciate the rich biodiversity of this marine conservation zone and we always take care to respect the wide range of fauna and wildlife that live in this fragile environment. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot birds such as swans, herons, kingfishers, sandpipers, oyster catchers and curlews.

On the way down you’ll stop at a secluded inlet and enjoy complimentary refreshments and a snack. Once you reach Bigbury Bay, we’ll arrange for your transport back to Aveton Gifford.

Two hour Avon Estuary wet walk £35 per person (minimum 4 people)

Mandy took us on the Avon Estuary wet walk. What an amazing trip, the whole family loved it. We walked along the side of the river in some beautiful woods before wading out into the river. The water was crystal clear and not cold at all. We stopped for a delicious cream tea on a beach and the kids splashed about and had a great time. The views as we came down to Bigbury Bay was fantastic and we all floated down the last bit before climbing out onto the beach. Mandy was a great guide and very friendly, and it was a great way to spend a morning with the family.

We booked the Avon river wet walk with Mandy and Simon. The Estuary was beautiful and we saw loads of birds. We’d never seen wild Samphire before which was a real treat and the colours were spectacular. Mandy and Simon were brilliant, pointing out the different types of birds and gave us a gluten-free cake and brewed fresh coffee. A fun way to spend a few hours, thanks a million!
